While my body was asleep, I think my soul rode on a triangular-shaped UFO and went to Venus. It was a very beautiful place, and it was very green.

Subject: Maple tree from 515 Westgate
Joshua - -here is a letter I wrote two years ago when I tried to deliver a tree to you in Webster Groves:Dear Susan and Josh,
A year or so ago, a fine looking young fellow, paused in my front yard looking up into a big silver Maple tree. I finally said hello and asked what he was looking at.
“Oh,” he said, “my grandmother planted that tree…” and we had an awfully nice chat about things —crayon marks on the wall and other relics that have made me think about the previous inhabitants of the house.
The problem was, even then, that my tree company was badgering me to take the tree down: it’s destroying the wall, shading the junipers, it threatens to fall on the house, fence and cars, has some virus they can’t keep from spreading to the other trees… on and on.
I have finally relented but I couldn’t help remembering your son’s wistful loving look at that tree.
So here is an offspring of the beloved tree for you to put in your new yard if you would like to. The tree people tell me that fall is a great time to plant it. I wish you good luck and many happy autumns under its golden yellow leaves.

Well, needless to say, I could not find you in Webster — only learned then you had moved. The little transplanted tree found it’s way to New York and stayed in Westchester since 2007 in the pot I’d planted it for delivery. Found your email on the internet and so here it is.
I happen to be in Cambridge for a couple of days and have brought the little tree with me. Call my cell -666-420-1488, if you would be so kind, and let me know where I can drop it off. I do hope your son will remember his happy days with his grandmother when he sees it.
